Specimens and Requirements

Some specimen restrictions exist, including animal specimens and some uncommon human specimens. If a specimen is deemed

unacceptable, it will not be tested and the order will be cancelled unless validation information is provided. Please contact us for specific

specimen requirements.

During specimen transit, a physician, hospital, or office may cancel a test. For specimens that have been delivered but not yet tested, a nominal cancellation fee will apply.

To submit a request for cancellation, contact us.

Reference Ranges

When possible, Tenet Diagnostics establishes its own testing reference ranges. Depending on the procedure, we may use reference ranges recommended by the reagent manufacturer or those that appear in the scientific literature. Some of our ranges have been established by consulting with major healthcare organizations.

Specimen Retention

Once testing has concluded, samples will be refrigerated for 14 days before being discarded. Because sample retention times vary, if a sample requires retention beyond 14 days, it will be kept frozen. Retention times are determined by federal, state, and test manufacturer guidelines.

  • Proper labeling is essential to getting your patients’ lab results quickly so you can provide the best possible care. Below you’ll find our full set of labeling guidelines:
  • At the time of collection, label all specimens with at least two patient identifiers. These should include the patient’s last name followed by first name or initial or their ID code. The second identifier may include the date of birth, requisition number, or barcode.
  • Make sure to securely affix the label. The label should include the patient’s name, second patient identifier, physician account number, and collection date.
  • Use ballpoint pen for hand-written labels. Label glass slides in pencil on the frosted end with two patient identifiers
  • Place labels on tubes lengthwise.
  • If submitting in a non-tube container such as a transfer vial, include the specimen type on the label (serum, urine, etc.).
  • If submitting for microbiological tests such as cultures or microscopic exams, include the type and source of the organisms to be tested for if applicable.

Each specimen has specific collection requirements to ensure that test results are asaccurate and fast as possible. The following tips will help you collect specimens correctly the first time:

  • Include no less than the stated minimum specimen for the test
  • When drawing blood, ensure that you draw an amount 2.5 times the serum or plasma volume required.
  • Avoid overfilling tubes when specimen requires freezing
  • Handle specimens carefully to avoid hemolysis
  • Use the proper container for each specimen
  • Correctly label each specimen and include all necessary information
  • Ensure that container lids are fully tightened to avoid leaks and contamination
